Thursday, Sept. 29th

We are practising creating ARGUMENTS with a “town hall meeting” on legalizing marijuana.  Please prepare a two minute argument for the stakeholder that you represent. Deliver you argument from the PERSPECTIVE of your persona.  Be sure to have a thesis, a line of reasoning (inductive or deductive), credible evidence, and appeals to logos, ethos, pathos.

We will hold the “town hall meeting” on Tuesday.

As of 4:30 on Thursday, Sept. 29th, I still need Metacognitive Journal entries on the “Human Hamburger” argument from Shane, Patricia, and Chantel.

Shane and Jamie also need to ENROL on the College Board website.

Tuesday, Sept. 27th

We continued working through ARGUMENTS and LINES OF REASONING today.

We identified the author’s argument/main idea/thesis in “Making Human Hamburgers: Bioethics and the Yuck Factor.”

Finish the analysis of the argument by writing the ANSWERS to the following questions in your METACOGNITIVE JOURNAL:

  1.  Explain the author’s line of reasoning by identifying the claims (reasons) used to build the argument and the connections (warrants) between them.
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the evidence the author uses to support the claims made in the argument.

Please bring toonies for the Terry Fox Run tomorrow.

Thursday, Sept. 22nd

We briefly discussed the C.R.A.A.P.and R.A.V.E.N. tests before launching into ARGUMENTS.  We are in the midst of analyzing Jim Jeffries’ argument on gun control, and we shall finish it up next class.

You should have handed in the C.R.A.A.P., R.A.V.E.N., and the Syrian Refugee worksheet on lenses and perspectives.

Tuesday, Sept. 20th

We went over difficulties encountered in creating the bibliography.  I highly recommend that you check out the Purdue site on the MLA Format.

We then went over the differences between SCHOLARLY and POPULAR sources, the varying credibility of online sources, the R.A.V.E.N. test for print sources, and the C.R.A.A.P. test for online sources.  Please perform the R.A.V.E.N. on a print source from your bibliography ( or use Thomas’ example) AND the C.R.A.A.P. test on an online source from your bibliography ( or use Thomas’ example).

You also need to finish the worksheet on the Syrian Refugee Crisis, which will show me whether or not you grasp the differences between a LENS and PERSPECTIVES.

Friday, Sept. 16th

We had a work day in the computer lab.  If you have not done so already, please finish your bibliography  and post it to the google doc (the same one you are using for the journal).  It should be in MLA Format.

Do the best you can.  We will go over the format in class on Tuesday.

As of Monday morning, I still need bibliographies from:  Kiran, Jamie, Ryan, and Chantel, and Aiden’s Journal #2.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday, Sept. 14th

Each of you picked a topic from the “Possible Research Topics” board and/or the brainstorming on UTOPIA, and generated a RESEARCH QUESTION that fulfils the criteria we discussed.

We did the Zoom activity to illustrate the importance of looking at issues from multiple perspectives, and we discussed the differences between a LENS and a PERSPECTIVE.

Write a METACOGNITIVE JOURNAL ENTRY on the above.  Consider both the concepts and the process. Which of the BIG IDEAS in Q.U.E.S.T. were engaged?

Share your google doc to

You do not have to work on your research bibliography at home.  We shall meet in B119 next class to continue working on this.  Do note that you should list your sources in MLA FORMAT.  You may refer to this Purdue site for reference on the MLA FORMAT:
